Units in Betting Explained โ The #1 Skill for Long-Term Profit
How to Set Your Unit Size
Step 1: decide your total bankroll. This is money set aside ONLY for betting โ money you can afford to lose entirely without affecting your life.
Step 2: set your unit size as a percentage of that bankroll.
For beginners: start at 1-2%. You can always increase later. You can't un-lose a blown bankroll.
Why Units Matter More Than Dollars
Saying "I won $500 this week" tells you nothing. Was your bankroll $1,000? Then you're up 50% โ incredible. Was it $50,000? Then you're up 1% โ barely moving.
Units normalize everything. "I'm up 12 units this month" means the same thing whether your bankroll is $500 or $50,000. It also lets you compare your performance against other bettors and AI models objectively.
Our confidence scores on Predictify Sports map to unit recommendations:
- 55-60% confidence: 1 unit bet
- 60-65% confidence: 1.5 units
- 65%+ confidence (โก picks): 2 units
- Below 55%: pass or 0.5 units only
Flat Betting vs Variable Sizing
Flat betting means every bet is exactly 1 unit regardless of confidence. Simple and safe. Recommended for beginners.
Variable sizing means adjusting your bet size based on confidence. Our โก high-confidence picks might warrant 2 units while a 56% lean gets 0.5 units. More profitable if your confidence scores are well-calibrated, but riskier if they're not.
Start flat. Graduate to variable after you've tracked at least 200 bets and verified your confidence scores are accurate.
Tracking Your Performance in Units
Keep a simple spreadsheet or use our Results page:
A profitable bettor averages +5 to +10 units per month. Anything above +10 units/month is elite. If you're losing more than 10 units in a month, reduce your unit size or reassess your strategy.
The Golden Rules of Bankroll Management
- Never bet more than 3% of your bankroll on a single game โ no matter how confident you are
- Never chase losses by increasing bet size after a losing day
- Reassess your unit size monthly โ if your bankroll grows, your unit size grows proportionally
- Keep betting money separate from living money โ always
- If you lose 20% of your bankroll, take a break and review your process
These rules are more important than any prediction model, any AI system, or any hot tip. The best pick in the world doesn't help if you've already blown your bankroll.
