Over/Under Betting Explained โ€” How Totals Work

By Predictify Sportsยท4 min

How Over/Under Betting Works

In an Over/Under bet, the sportsbook sets a total โ€” a predicted combined score for both teams. You bet on whether the actual combined score will be over or under that number.

For example, if the NFL total for Chiefs vs Bills is set at 47.5, betting the Over means you think the teams will combine for 48 or more points. Betting the Under means you think they'll combine for 47 or fewer.

The half-point (47.5 instead of 47) eliminates the possibility of a push โ€” the result landing exactly on the number. One side always wins.

Over/Under bets typically carry standard odds of -110 on both sides, meaning you risk $110 to win $100 regardless of whether you pick Over or Under.

Why the Line Moves

Sportsbooks adjust the total based on betting action and new information. Common reasons for line movement include:

  • Weather: Wind, rain, or extreme cold in NFL games typically pushes totals down.
  • Injuries: A key offensive player being ruled out can lower the total.
  • Betting volume: If 80% of money comes in on the Over, the book may raise the line to balance action.
  • Late scratches: In MLB, a pitching change can move the total by 1-2 runs.

Sharp bettors look for line movement that creates value โ€” if a total opens at 48 and moves to 46.5 due to weather, the Under may already be priced in.

Push Scenarios

A push occurs when the combined score lands exactly on a whole-number total. If the O/U is 47 and the final combined score is 47, both Over and Under bets are refunded.

This is why most modern sportsbooks use half-points. A total of 47.5 cannot push โ€” the result is always decisively Over or Under. When you see a whole-number total, be aware of push risk.

Typical Totals by Sport

Each sport has its own scoring range, so totals vary dramatically:

SportTypical RangeExample
NFL40 โ€“ 55Chiefs vs Bills O/U 47.5
NBA200 โ€“ 235Celtics vs Lakers O/U 218.5
MLB6 โ€“ 10Yankees vs Red Sox O/U 8.5
NHL5 โ€“ 7Oilers vs Flames O/U 6.5
Soccer2 โ€“ 3.5Arsenal vs Liverpool O/U 2.5

Understanding these ranges helps you quickly gauge whether a total seems high or low for a given matchup.

Totals are one of the simplest bets to understand: you don't need to predict who wins, just how much scoring happens. This makes O/U a great entry point for new bettors.

Totals also let you root for both teams simultaneously. If you bet the Over on a football game, every touchdown is exciting regardless of who scores it. It keeps the entire game entertaining.

Our AI models predict game totals by analyzing pace of play, defensive efficiency, weather, rest days, and historical trends. When our projected total differs significantly from the sportsbook's line, that's a potential value bet.
